Iowa State Government

The Executive Branch

Headed by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor who are elected for four-year terms. The Lieutenant Governor assumes the Governor’s office if he/she dies or is unable to serve.

The Legislative Branch

Consists of the Iowa General Assembly (IGA). Like the federal United States Congress, the Iowa General Assembly is a two-part body, composed of the upper house Iowa Senate and the lower Iowa House of Representatives respectively. There are no term limits for either chamber.

• The IGA consists of 50 senators and 100 representatives
• Each senator represents about 59,500 people and each representative about 29,750 people

The Judicial Branch

Consists of the Iowa Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the U.S. state of Iowa. As constitutional head of the Iowa Judicial Branch, the Court is composed of a Chief Justice and six Associate Justices. The Court holds its regular sessions in Des Moines in the Iowa Judicial Branch Building located at 1111 East Court Avenue on the state Capitol grounds just south of the Iowa State Capitol.

Located in Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines, and houses the Iowa Senate, Iowa House of Representatives, the Office of the Governor, and the Offices of the Attorney General, Auditor, Treasurer, and Secretary of State.
