And the reason it is confusing is that there is no one agency in Iowa that provides all of the assistance services available for every population. In other words, there is rarely "one-stop-shopping" for assistance. For example, the Iowa Community Action Agency in Des Moines is listed as “City of Des Moines Community Development Department;” it offers energy (LIHEAP) and weatherization programs but not the FaDSS or FIP. There is a FaDSS program in Polk County and FaDSS programs in each of the 99 counties. Some of the FaDSS agencies and Community Action Agencies overlap.
If you are confused (the confusion is increased when you get acronyms thrown at you: FIP; FIA: FaDSS; LIHEAP; CAA), call 211 and they will help you. Also, if you call the wrong agency, they should be able to get you to the right agency. Do not be afraid or discouraged if you make a mistake while attempting to reach an agency. The worst thing you can do is give up, so keep trying until you are satisfied!
